Al Ain: Electronic technology can help students become better writers, but they must make use of it wisely, said Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, on Tuesday at an Al Ain conference.
"Some do not make wise choices& in using readily available material on the internet," he said.
He was speaking at the second English Conference of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) at Al Ain Women's College.
The conference was organised by the Centre of Excellence for English under the theme "English is the Key: Cultivating Real Writers".
Shaikh Nahyan said students must understand the importance of maintaining honesty and integrity in their approach and use of material on the internet.
"We are fortunate that our leadership and our people are strongly committed to the global economy and to a knowledge-based future," he said.
Learning foreign languages, he said, shows Emiratis believe in the concept of a global community. He said it also enhances their capabilities on the international stage.
"They [foreign languages] improve our ability to understand and participate in international negotiations, and help strengthen global fellowship," he said.
Shaikh Nahyan, who is also Chancellor of the HCT, said teachers of the English language must be well prepared to take on new challenges in their profession.
They must be ready to meet the constant changes taking place in English language teaching such as educational technology, curriculum design, delivery strategies and assessment methodologies.
An HCT spokesperson said the Centre of Excellence for English recognises English as a key component for success.
The conference focuses on sharing best practices, expertise and ideas leading to success in the skill of writing.
The meeting was attended by around 400 participants from the 15 colleges within the HCT.
