Abu Dhabi: The UAE is making great efforts to combat the human trafficking menace, said Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for Federal National Council (FNC) Affairs and for Foreign Affairs.

He was replying to a question about effects of human trafficking during the FNC's 11th session, held on Tuesday.

"Combating human trafficking is a national issue that tops the list of priorities of the UAE's wise leadership which makes enormous efforts to safeguard the civil society from the repercussions of this crime," Gargash said.

He added while the UAE have never denied this border-crossing crime, it reiterated that the magnitude of human trafficking is not as portrayed and exaggerated by some who do so for certain purposes.

"The UAE is totally serious about dealing with this grave crime against humanity by utilising all legislative and executive channels as well as by cooperating with all countries in collaborative international efforts to fight this dangerous crime," Gargash said.

He pointed that discussions at FNC sessions about human trafficking represent a strong motivation for the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking to double its efforts in this regard.

"These rich discussions also send a clear message to the international community that there are great Arab efforts being made to combat this problem that poses a dangerous epidemic to humanity," Gargash said.

He noted that combating human trafficking is in line with Islamic and Arab traditions that respect and appreciate human being.
